Minister of Communication and Digital Responds to Amien Rais's Statement
Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid has spoken out regarding a video uploaded by Amien Rais on his YouTube channel concerning the closeness between President Prabowo Subianto and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
“The Ministry of Communication and Digital has identified the dissemination of a video containing slanderous narratives, character assassination, and personal attacks directed at the President of the Republic of Indonesia. The video was uploaded by the Chairman of the Shura Council of the Ummat Party [Amien Rais],” Meutya stated in an official Instagram post from the Ministry of Communication and Digital on Saturday (2/5).
Meutya described Amien Rais’s statement as containing hate speech. She assessed that it has the potential to divide the nation.
“Komdigi asserts that the content of the video is hoaxes, slander, and contains hate speech. The narrative constructed is an attempt to demean the dignity of the State’s Highest Leader, lacks factual basis, and is part of a provocation to create public unrest. This has the potential to divide the nation,” Meutya said.
“The digital democracy space is a space for debating ideas, not a space for producing hate content that attacks anyone’s dignity,” Meutya added.
Furthermore, Meutya stated that Komdigi will take steps in accordance with applicable laws.
“Anyone who creates, participates in distributing, and/or transmitting the video knowingly has committed a legal violation as regulated in the ITE Law Number 1 of 2024 Article 27A and Article 28 (2),” she said.
The controversial video uploaded through the Amien Rais Official YouTube account has now been deleted.
Meanwhile, Ummat Party DPP Chairman Aznur Syamsu emphasised that Amien Rais’s statement is not related to the party.
“That is Mr Amien’s personal statement, it has no connection to the Ummat Party. We from the Ummat Party regret statements like that from Mr Amien Rais, especially since he is a figure, at least he has been a figure,” Aznur said, quoted from detik.
