Minister of Communication and Digital Continues to Monitor Condition of Journalists Detained by Israel

The Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, has highlighted the detention of journalists from Republika and Tempo by Israeli soldiers in international waters, alongside a group participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla international humanitarian mission. Meutya ensured that the Ministry will continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to monitor the safety of the journalists detained by Israel.

“Kemkomdigi will continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant parties to monitor developments and support protection measures for Indonesian citizens involved in this mission,” Meutya stated in her briefing on Tuesday (19/5/2026).

According to the Minister, the journalists were performing reporting duties as part of a humanitarian mission heading towards Gaza. “We follow the news regarding Indonesian journalists performing reporting duties in a humanitarian mission to Gaza with great concern. Amidst conflict situations, the safety of Indonesian citizens, including members of the press, must always be our collective concern,” she said.

She also emphasised the importance of respecting journalistic work and providing a safe space, particularly during humanitarian crises. Meutya cited statements from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which indicated that coordination has been established with the Indonesian Embassies in Ankara, Cairo, and Amman to prepare protection measures and expedite the repatriation of Indonesian citizens if necessary. “Our prayers and hopes accompany all journalists and humanitarian volunteers, wishing them continued safety,” Meutya added.
