Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Urges Youth to Heighten Awareness of Digital Crime
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has called on all elements of society, particularly the younger generation, to continuously heighten their vigilance against the dangers of digital crime. “The digital space is currently filled with a variety of content, both highly beneficial and harmful,” Meutya Hafid stated in Medan, North Sumatra, on Sunday. According to her, digital crime, which often targets the younger generation, must be a concern for all elements of society because creating a safe digital space requires the role and contribution of every individual. “Given that most internet activities are also conducted personally in private spaces,” she said. Therefore, the former Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives urged the younger generation to be wiser and smarter in using the internet in this era of technological advancement. She noted that social media content can influence people’s perspectives and behaviour if not utilised carefully and wisely. “The internet is like a double-edged sword. It has many benefits, but also many negative impacts if not used wisely,” she stated. In raising awareness of digital crime, Meutya said the ministry she leads will strengthen public digital literacy through various efforts. “Digital literacy is one of the tasks of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to reduce and prevent digital crime. We will encourage the public, especially the younger generation, to become ambassadors for healthy internet use,” she said.
