Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti has outlined the contents of a joint ministerial decree (SKB) signed by seven ministers regarding guidelines for the utilisation of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Mu’ti stated that one of the key provisions in the guidelines is an ethical code for AI usage.

“Within this material we have provided the ethical code regarding the use of, particularly, AI,” Mu’ti told journalists at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 12 March 2026.

Mu’ti indicated that the joint decree also guides schools in providing students with the capability to use AI and coding. He noted that the decree will also guide how AI can support learning activities.

“As was previously stated by Coordinating Minister Pratikno, the use of coding and AI in schools has two purposes,” he explained. “First, it provides students with the skills and capacity to use coding and AI. Second, it supports learning activities.”

Mu’ti stated that the ministry has already conducted training on AI and coding materials for teachers. He assured that the use of AI and coding would be safe and supportive of learning activities.

“To that end, we have already conducted training for teachers who instruct coding and AI, and have also provided educational materials. Having provided these materials, we can guarantee that what is being taught is safe coding and AI usage that supports learning activities,” he said.

Seven ministers signed the joint decree containing guidelines for the utilisation of digital technology and AI across formal, non-formal, and informal education pathways. The decree was signed under the leadership of Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno.

The signing took place at the office of the Coordinating Ministry in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 12 March. The seven ministers who signed were: Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Digital Transformation Meutya Hafid, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Fauzi, and Minister of Public Works and Housing Wihaji.
