Minister Nusron: Satellite City Development to Address Housing Backlog

Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency (BPN) Nusron Wahid has revealed plans to build satellite cities to address the housing backlog. “So, in order to overcome the housing backlog, the President of the Republic of Indonesia will create new urban hubs to address the housing backlog, in addition to vertical housing, there will be new residential hubs,” Nusron said in Jakarta on Tuesday. The Ministry of ATR/BPN has already prepared land data for the satellite city development. “Where are they? Starting in North Sumatra, South Sumatra, Lampung, then Banten, West Java, namely Bogor and West Bandung, then Central Java in Batang, East Java in Mojokerto and Pasuruan, then West Kalimantan, South Sulawesi,” Nusron added. He also mentioned there are new proposals from three additional provinces currently under verification, namely East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and West Nusa Tenggara. Regarding the land area for the satellite cities, Nusron stated that each city requires a minimum of approximately 200 hectares. “The land has been applied for and all of it is state-owned. There are some former Building Use Rights (HGB) held by private entities, but we are not extending them because they were given the opportunity to renew and did not do so, therefore we will reorganise it,” he said. The Ministry of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/BPN is strengthening its support for the National Strategic Programme through the development of vertical housing and satellite cities. Minister Nusron Wahid stated that support is provided through the provision of large-scale land across various regions of Indonesia. The Ministry of ATR/BPN has prepared potential land spread across several areas, including Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The total indicated land area recorded across Indonesia reaches more than 129,000 hectares. For urban areas, the government is prioritising the construction of vertical housing, especially for low-income communities. Meanwhile, for the development of satellite cities, land on a larger scale has been prepared. Minister of Housing and Residential Areas Maruarar Sirait stated that land availability is a key factor in the success of the National Strategic Programme.
