Minister Maruarar Sirait Directs Urban Housing Towards Vertical Development
Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait has revealed that housing provision in urban areas is being directed towards the construction of vertical dwellings. He stated that the issue of housing provision, particularly in urban areas, is confronted with limited land availability for home construction. “Therefore, housing provision in urban areas is directed through the construction of vertical housing,” Ara said in Jakarta on Tuesday. The home ownership backlog remains a major problem, he said, with the national backlog standing at 9.6 million units based on the 2025 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas). “This is also a directive from President Prabowo so that land is not excessively used for housing, hence it is directed upwards (vertical housing),” Ara stated. Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait disclosed that land provided by the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) is being utilised for the construction of flats and satellite cities for the public. Regarding flats, he noted that this is a concern for President Prabowo and Housing Task Force Chairman Hashim Djojohadikusumo. Ara said that his ministry is currently inspecting land provided by the Ministry of ATR at 188 locations. The Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency is strengthening its support for the National Strategic Programme through the development of vertical housing settlements and satellite cities. Minister of ATR/Head of BPN Nusron Wahid stated that support is being provided through the provision of large-scale land in various regions of Indonesia. The Ministry of ATR/BPN has prepared potential land spread across several areas, including Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The total land indication in Indonesia that has been recorded reaches more than 129,000 hectares.
