Minister Jumhur Says Giant Investors Approach Him to Plant Thousands of Mangroves

Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat, has claimed that giant investors have approached him with plans to plant hundreds of thousands of mangroves and similar species. He made the statement during a speech at the World Mangrove Day event at the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura) in Denpasar on Sunday (26/7/2026).

“I, along with Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and certainly with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and the Ministry of Forestry, have been approached by giant investors. They want to plant hundreds of thousands of mangroves and so on,” Jumhur said.

Jumhur understands that the planting will be profitable for investors from a business perspective, whilst simultaneously creating economic activity, preserving the ecosystem, and generating green jobs. Over the next three to four years, workers will receive honorariums and wages for maintaining the mangroves and selling carbon credits on the carbon market.

“The community will receive benefit sharing or income that is even greater than that of the investors,” Jumhur explained.

For Jumhur, this activity is mutually beneficial. Within the next one to two years, the contribution of this carbon market-based environmental restoration movement to Indonesia’s economic growth will become visible. Millions of people will also be absorbed during the course of the activity.

“I think this is a great hope and Indonesia is greatly advantaged by this situation because Indonesia is a large country with a large population, a large territory, and a very large sea. And that is economic potential, what I call unconventional economic potential,” Jumhur elaborated.
