Minister Jumhur Hidayat Outlines First 100-Day Targets for Environment

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Jumhur Hidayat, has presented the outcomes of the Ministry of Environment’s participation in the London Climate Action Week (LCAW). The event, which gathered global leaders, business actors, and organisations to accelerate climate action, focused on three main issues: climate change, new and renewable energy, and biodiversity. During LCAW, Indonesia carried a mission related to ‘climate justice’, encompassing mitigation, adaptation, and efforts to promote public welfare in the face of climate change. In the energy transition, Indonesia is also pushing for efforts to reduce carbon emissions while providing solutions for workers in the fossil fuel sector that is being phased out. Regarding biodiversity, Indonesia is being encouraged to become a leader in its management, given its status as a country with immense biodiversity. As the new Environment Minister, Jumhur Hidayat has been tasked by President Prabowo with addressing waste management and developing waste-to-energy projects during his first 100 days, with initial phases in Bekasi, Bogor Raya, and Denpasar. In his concurrent role as Head of the Environmental Control Agency, he is also focusing on environmental protection, an area he noted has been neglected for the past decade, resulting in sanctions against 447 local governments and over 3,000 companies for environmental management violations.
