Minister Jumhur Calls on Businesses and Public for 'Ecological Repentance'
Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Jumhur Hidayat, has affirmed that environmental management under the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency will deliver justice for communities and the environment, including indigenous peoples and local residents. Jumhur stated that efforts to address climate change, including the energy transition through carbon trading and biodiversity credits set to be implemented, are guaranteed to provide benefits, involve, and bring prosperity to local communities. One of the programmes being pushed by Minister Jumhur is the National Ecological Repentance (Tobat Ekologi Nasional), an effort to encourage the repair of environmental damage through a number of activities, including planting 2 billion trees, planting mangroves, cleaning rivers, and processing waste. The Ministry of Environment is inviting the public, business actors, and even oligarchs to jointly promote ‘Ecological Repentance’ in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create ‘green job’ employment. On the other hand, the ministry is also pushing for the success of the Indonesia Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful (ASRI) Movement launched by President Prabowo to overcome the waste crisis and promote sustainable development.
