Minister: Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Hotspots Reduced to 3.6 Percent

Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat stated that efforts to extinguish the fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Processing Site (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, have shown significant progress. Entering the sixth day on Sunday (5/7), the remaining hotspots are estimated to be only around 3.6 percent, or 1.68 hectares, of the 18-hectare area that was previously ablaze. “Initially, around 70 percent of this area was burning. Then gradually, through hard work, it was extinguished, by injecting water from below, from above helicopters continue to operate, fire engines and so on, so now only 3.6 percent remains. This means it is an extraordinary figure,” said Jumhur after inspecting the Jatiwaringin TPA. In addition, the Manggala Agni team is still carrying out extinguishing efforts using the injection method, namely injecting water directly into the waste piles to extinguish embers beneath the surface. “Then there is the Manggala Agni team carrying out injection (extinguishing from below). In theory it should be out, but if it remains hot continuously, there is potential for it to burn again if we are not vigilant,” Jumhur explained. The Jatiwaringin TPA fire has been ongoing since Tuesday (30/6) and is still being handled on the sixth day. The firefighting operation involves fire officers, BNPB, Manggala Agni, heavy equipment, and water bombing helicopters to control the fire burning the waste piles.
