Minister Imipas reviews assimilation and education facilities at Warungkiara Prison

Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto reviewed the assimilation and education facilities at the Class IIA Warungkiara Prison in Sukabumi Regency, West Java, on Wednesday. The prison’s assimilation and education centre is a hub for fostering self-reliance through agriculture, livestock, and fisheries for inmates. The facility serves as a model for food security programmes in the Sukabumi region. During the working visit, Minister Agus and attending guests harvested agricultural produce from the prison, including purple and green aubergines. Agus also took time to speak with inmates involved in the productive rehabilitation programme, encouraging them to remain optimistic about life both inside and outside the prison. According to the retired police general, the efforts by Warungkiara Prison support the 15 action programmes of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections and the broader corrections transformation. ‘I personally want to express my gratitude for their performance. Firstly, they support the government’s programme for food security activities. Although currently, this is still used to handle the needs within prisons and detention centres in the community,’ Agus said. He expressed hope that the food self-sufficiency programme at Warungkiara Prison would eventually contribute to providing results for the public’s benefit through the economic activities undertaken. ‘My hope is that once there is a profit, they can contribute in the form of social assistance to the community. Whether it is providing basic food packages or development activities, such as house repairs as was carried out earlier. This is a good effort because the corrections system exists within the community environment. So, it must do good for the community,’ Agus added. Acting Head of the West Java Regional Office for Corrections, Kusnali, stated that the Warungkiara Prison has optimised the assimilation and education facility, named SAE Berkah Mandiri, on 3.5 hectares of land by developing various productive sectors. These include agriculture and horticulture, chicken farming, sheep farming, cattle farming, freshwater fisheries, and integrated environmental management and food security. Through the optimisation of SAE Berkah Mandiri, his office seeks to provide rehabilitation that is not only security-oriented but also capable of generating economic added value, supporting national food security, strengthening the quality of rehabilitation, and realising a productive, independent, and beneficial society. Separately, Head of Warungkiara Prison, Kurnia Panji Pamekas, stated that the food security area spans 7 hectares, with usage comprising approximately 1 hectare of livestock and fattening areas within the residential block, 2 hectares of opened productive agricultural land, and 3.5 hectares designated for agricultural and food security development. The area also includes supporting facilities such as a layer chicken coop, a sheep pen, freshwater fish farming ponds, a storage warehouse, farm access roads, irrigation channels, and other supporting infrastructure. ‘This area serves as a productive rehabilitation facility that provides work skills to inmates while simultaneously yielding various economically valuable agricultural, livestock, and fishery commodities,’ Kurnia said.
