Minister: Gadget restrictions create safe school environment

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti stated that a newly issued circular on restricting gadget use aims to create a safe and comfortable school environment. The policy, outlined in Circular Letter Number 18 of 2026, specifically targets students under the age of 16.

“We have issued a Ministerial Circular on the restriction of gadget use for those under 16 years old. This is part of our effort to build a safe and comfortable physical school environment,” Mu’ti said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that the policy is also intended to foster an environment where students can express themselves and develop their creativity, while ensuring their spiritual, social, and digital security. “This approach prioritises educational and pedagogical principles,” he added.

Beyond creating a safe and comfortable school atmosphere, Mu’ti noted that the restriction aligns with child protection efforts in the digital space as mandated by Government Regulation on the Governance of Electronic Systems for Child Protection. It also supports the ministry’s programme to cultivate a school culture that is Safe, Healthy, and Clean.

“This is our shared commitment to building a safe and comfortable school culture, providing psychological, mental, and spiritual support so that children can learn optimally,” Mu’ti said.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid welcomed the school gadget restriction policy, stating that it complements the government’s commitment to protecting children from negative digital threats. “This regulation on restricting gadget use in the school environment further strengthens our commitment to shield children from harmful content in the digital space,” Meutya said.
