Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Proposes Moving Women's-Only Carriage to the Middle Following Bekasi Timur Train Crash

Jakarta – The Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (Minister PPPA), Arifah Fauzi, has proposed moving the women’s-only KRL carriage, currently at the end, to the middle of the train formation. This proposal was made in response to the collision between the long-distance Argo Bromo train and a KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. “But with this incident, we propose that if possible, the women’s carriage be placed in the middle. So the men’s at the ends, yes, front and back for men, and women in the middle like that. For now,” said Arifah to reporters at Bekasi General Hospital on Tuesday, 28 April 2026. Arifah said she had coordinated and directly asked PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) why the women’s-only carriage is placed at the front or back. The reason, she said, is to avoid disputes over space. “Earlier, when we talked with KAI, why it’s placed at the very front or very back, so that there are no disputes,” she explained. Previously reported, the Head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Kabasarnas), Marshal Madya Muhammad Syafii, stated that all fatalities from the collision were adult women. He said there were no child victims in this accident. “I saw there were none (child victims), all are in the adult category,” said Syafii during a press conference at Bekasi Timur Station on Tuesday, 28 April 2026. He noted that the evacuation process was halted at 08:00 WIB. Syafii said all deceased victims have now been handed over to the hospital for identification. “At 08:00 WIB, the evacuation operation is complete. All our SAR teams have returned to their respective bases. I assure you there are no more victims found,” he stated.
