Jakarta (ANTARA) — Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman has stated that Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in eight strategic food commodities, thanks to collaboration between the government, farmers, agricultural instructors, the military and police, regional governments, academics and agricultural enterprises.

In a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, Amran said the eight commodities comprise rice, maize, large chillies, bird’s eye chillies, consumption sugar, chicken meat, chicken eggs and shallots.

According to Amran, this achievement means Indonesia no longer depends on imports for these commodities, and some of them have even entered export markets.

He said the Government Rice Reserve (CBP) stock has exceeded five million tonnes, which he described as the highest in Indonesian history.

Amran also noted that the Farmers’ Exchange Rate (NTP) reached 127.73 in May 2026, whilst the agricultural sector’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.74 per cent.

Amran said the government will continue to increase food production, maintain price stability and improve farmers’ welfare.

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto affirmed that the agricultural sector is the main foundation of national development. Amid global turmoil, Indonesia has recorded various strategic achievements, ranging from self-sufficiency in eight food commodities, the highest government rice reserves in history, to an NTP at its highest level since Indonesian independence.

The President delivered these remarks during a briefing at the Plenary Cabinet Meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday (20/7).

The President emphasised that the primary measure of a nation’s success is its ability to provide food for its people.

According to the President, no civilisation can survive without food security. Therefore, the government has placed agricultural development as its top priority through the provision of productive land, water management, policies that favour farmers, and the availability of affordable fertiliser.

“We ask ourselves now: are food prices under control, is fertiliser available for the people, for farmers, and at affordable prices? That is what we continue to work on,” he said.

The President also stated that the various policies implemented by the Red and White Cabinet have produced tangible results.

“As I mentioned earlier, we have achieved self-sufficiency in eight food commodities. Our rice reserves are the highest in the history of the Republic of Indonesia. Our Farmers’ Exchange Rate is the highest in the history of the Republic of Indonesia,” the President affirmed.

“The world is at war. Many countries are worried and panicking over food problems. We strengthened our food security ahead of time,” he said.

The President also emphasised that all government policies are grounded in the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, particularly Article 33, which places the management of natural resources for the greatest prosperity of the people.

According to the President, national economic strength must be realised through policies that side with the people, including ensuring that all of society has access to sufficient, nutritious and affordable food.
