Minister Dody Hanggodo: Dams Are Strategic Infrastructure Supporting Food and Energy Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo stated that dams are strategic infrastructure that supports food self-sufficiency and new renewable energy.
He explained the strategic functions of this infrastructure, affirming that dams play a multifunctional role in supporting the livelihoods of the wider public over the long term.
“Dams are multifunctional infrastructure built to provide long-term benefits for the community. Beyond strengthening irrigation services as a pillar of food self-sufficiency, dams also supply raw water, support the development of new renewable energy, and reduce flood risks in various regions,” Dody said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
PT Nindya Karya (Persero) has reinforced its contribution to supporting the government’s national strategic agenda in the fields of water management and food security. This was demonstrated through the completion of construction on two important dams included among the five dams inaugurated by President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto on Friday, 10 July 2026.
The five dams inaugurated were the Jlantah Dam in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java; the Meninting Dam in West Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara; the Sidan Dam in Gianyar Regency, Bali; the Keureuto Dam in North Aceh Regency, Aceh; and the Rukoh Dam in Pidie Regency, Aceh.
Of the five dams inaugurated by the President, two were projects carried out by Nindya Karya: the Meninting Dam in West Nusa Tenggara Province and the Rukoh Dam in Pidie Regency, Aceh Province.
Technically, the Meninting Dam built by Nindya Karya has a storage capacity of 9.91 million cubic metres. The infrastructure is designed to irrigate 1,559 hectares, supply raw water at 0.15 cubic metres per second, reduce flood risk across an area of 59 hectares, and has the potential to generate environmentally friendly energy through a 0.80 MW hydroelectric plant and a 9.23 MW floating solar power installation.
Meanwhile, the Rukoh Dam in Aceh also brings a massive storage capacity relied upon to strengthen the region’s agricultural water system.
President Director of PT Nindya Karya (Persero), Firmansyah, affirmed the company’s readiness to fully support the success of national development priority programmes, particularly in strengthening the foundations of water, food, and energy security set out by the government.
“Nindya Karya is committed to continuing to support and ensure the success of the government’s programmes, especially in realising food self-sufficiency in the homeland,” Firmansyah said.
