Minister chairs Singapore FA

SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore Communications Minister Mah Bow Tan has taken over the reins of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), vowing to clean up the sport and have Singapore pressing for a 2010 World Cup berth, a report said Tuesday.

Mah said he hoped to bring a "sense of professionalism" to the association, adding he was "fed-up with the excuses and in- fighting that plagued past national teams' performances," the Straits Times said.

"This dream that Singapore be in the World Cup finals is shared by many Singaporeans," he said.

Singapore soccer enthusiasts, buoyed by its win in the Tiger Cup championship in Vietnam last September, has launched a project aimed at getting the Singapore team into the 2010 World Cup.
