Minister Brian Affirms URI Will Not Oversee All Universities

Minister of Higher Education and Science Technology (Mendikti Saintek) Brian Yuliarto has stated that the establishment of the Universitas Republik Indonesia (URI) will not alter the function of his ministry. Brian emphasised that the Ministry of Higher Education and Science Technology continues to oversee higher education institutions in Indonesia. “No, our function does not change, everything remains, nothing changes. So perhaps in the near future, the Governor of URI will further explain its role and position,” Brian said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (23/7/2026). On the other hand, Brian stressed that URI will not oversee all campuses in Indonesia. “But that does not mean URI oversees all universities, no, it is not like that,” he said. Furthermore, Brian also stated that the formation of URI will not alter the budget for the Ministry of Higher Education. It is known that Prabowo inaugurated the Governor of URI, and Deputy Governor of URI at the Palace on Thursday (23/7). The Governor of URI explained that his institution’s task is to prepare future leaders. He said URI will lead three educational bodies under it. “So the President is very concerned about human resources, especially for Indonesia’s future leaders in particular. This is why he desires education at the primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, higher education, and also government levels. He wants to consolidate and integrate several existing educational programmes,” he said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (22/7).
