Minister: Blockchain technology strengthens economic value of creative economy IP
Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya has said that the use of blockchain technology has the potential to increase the economic value and commercialisation of intellectual property (IP) owned by creative economy actors.
“Blockchain opens up space to strengthen policy, licensing, royalties, and even to present new IP-based financing models. But one principle must be maintained: innovation must go hand in hand with legal certainty and consumer protection,” Riefky said at the Indonesia Blockchain Week 2026 event in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Riefky said the development of digital technology must be directed towards creating new economic opportunities, increasing productivity and providing real benefits to society.
According to him, one of the opportunities for developing the economic assets of creative economy actors in the future is through IP tokenisation and the development of real world assets for digital creative economy products.
He assessed that Indonesia has strong capital to develop this ecosystem, ranging from a large market, creative talent, cultural wealth, IP and an entrepreneurial spirit.
“We do not want Indonesia to merely be a market; we want Indonesia to be a builder,” he stressed.
Tokenisation is the process of converting rights or ownership of an asset, including intellectual property, into a digital representation based on blockchain technology.
In the context of the creative economy, IP tokenisation can help record ownership, licensing, or economic rights over works digitally, potentially making it easier to manage, transact and develop the economic value of those works.
To realise this, the Creative Economy Ministry is encouraging collaboration with industry players and the blockchain community, not only through talent capacity building and training, but also by providing input on the regulations needed so that the blockchain ecosystem in Indonesia can develop.
Riefky said Indonesia needs to encourage more national founders, developers, creators and entrepreneurs to build technology-based solutions capable of competing globally.
On the other hand, the Creative Economy Ministry is encouraging the strengthening of the intellectual property valuation ecosystem by presenting 64 IP valuators and IP appraisers to strengthen the process of valuation and commercialisation of intellectual property.
The Creative Economy Ministry is also collaborating with the Financial Services Authority (OJK), particularly in the development of IP-based Web3 solutions.
This cooperation is considered important to bridge intellectual property with the financial ecosystem so that creative assets have a more measurable economic value and have the potential to be developed as a new source of financing for creative economy actors.
