Minister Agus Reveals Reasons for Reforming Prisons Plagued by Violations

Minister of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas) Agus Andrianto has expressed his desire to reform the prison system, which he believes is still plagued by numerous violations. According to Agus, the corrections sector also has significant potential to be developed in a better direction.

Agus recounted his experience when given the mandate by President Prabowo to serve as Minister of Imipas. He explained the reason he immediately focused on reforming corrections after taking office.

“When I received the mandate from the President to become Minister of Immigration and Corrections, I indeed focused more on corrections,” Agus said at Nusakambangan Prison, Cilacap, Central Java, on Monday (29/6/2026).

“Because there are indeed many problems there, and many opportunities for violations. But there are also many good opportunities that we can provide to inmates, including the utilisation of idle land,” he added.

Agus hopes that the Ministry of Imipas’s services to correctional inmates will improve in the future. He admitted that he is ready to accept corrections and information regarding officers who commit irregularities in carrying out their duties.

“For this reason, we are ready to accept corrections, especially from our media colleagues, to share information if there are officers who exploit correctional inmates or commit irregularities in the performance of their duties,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, together with the Ministry of Health, held a free tuberculosis (TBC) screening programme for inmates across Indonesia at Nusakambangan Prison.

“Today we can gather in the context of the national kickoff for free health checks and tuberculosis screening for correctional inmates to be implemented in 2026,” said Minister Agus Andrianto during the event at Nusakambangan Prison, Cilacap, Central Java, on Monday (29/6/2026).

Agus stated that this activity is a collaboration between the Ministry of Imipas and the Ministry of Health. This step was taken to support President Prabowo Subianto’s best and fastest result programme in early detection of diseases and the elimination of TBC, as well as achieving TBC elimination by 2030.

This programme is implemented in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 67 of 2021 concerning Tuberculosis Control and Presidential Regulation Number 12 of 2025 concerning the RPJMN 2025-2029.
