Minimum Age for Instagram, Facebook, and Threads Raised to 16 Years

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Meta has raised the minimum age limit for accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads to 16 years. This policy is being implemented for Indonesian users starting from Thursday (9/4/2026) yesterday. This step is taken as an effort to comply with the social media usage restriction rules under PP Tunas, which came into effect at the end of last March. Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid confirmed that her ministry has officially reviewed this change. “As of today, we have seen that Meta has officially amended its community guidelines by setting the minimum age limit to 16 years across all its platforms, namely Instagram, Facebook, and Threads,” Meutya said during a press conference yesterday. Meta also conveyed this change through a letter submitted to the Komdigi authority. She explained that Meta requested time to amend the Community Guidelines until Friday this week (10/4/2026). This is because time is needed to update for more than 100 million users. “So if friends check on different mobile phones, the display might still differ, but earlier we checked that most have already changed to 16, and tomorrow it is planned that all will change to 16 years,” she stated. “And this is already in two languages, so in English it is already there, and earlier we were reported that it is also available in Indonesian,” she added. The next stage after changing the Community Guidelines is to deactivate accounts that do not meet the age requirement. This will be done gradually. “The next stage is certainly to deactivate accounts under 16 years old. This is the commitment statement we have received, and in monitoring, of course, we need time because they just changed today and tomorrow. But as a statement of commitment, Meta has conveyed that they will also start deactivating gradually,” Meutya explained.
