Minimal Rainfall: BMKG Reveals Factors Affecting Batam's Weather
Rainfall remains minimal across Batam City, Riau Islands. The predominantly partly cloudy to cloudy weather conditions have meant that some parts of Batam have not yet received evenly distributed rainfall.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the Hang Nadim Batam Class I Meteorological Station stated that atmospheric conditions are one of the factors limiting the growth of rain clouds in the region.
A forecaster from BMKG Hang Nadim Batam explained that relatively low upper-level humidity means the water vapour content in the atmosphere is not yet sufficient to support widespread rain cloud formation.
In addition, fairly strong winds around the Riau Islands region are also affecting the distribution of water vapour. These conditions mean that the growth of convective clouds is not taking place optimally.
“The relatively low upper-level humidity and fairly strong winds around the Riau Islands region are still limiting the supply of water vapour needed to support massive rain cloud growth,” said the BMKG Hang Nadim Batam forecaster on Tuesday (25/8).
For Batam, BMKG forecasts that the weather will be dominated by partly cloudy to cloudy conditions. Air temperatures are expected to range from 25 to 33 degrees Celsius.
These conditions make the weather feel quite hot, especially when cloud cover decreases from morning to midday. Nevertheless, the potential for rain remains, although it is localised and uneven.
BMKG reminds that atmospheric conditions can change at any time. Rain cloud growth can occur if there is an increase in humidity and sufficient water vapour supply in a particular area.
Meanwhile, conditions in several other areas of the Riau Islands are relatively varied. Karimun still has the potential for light rain, while Tanjungpinang and Bintan are forecast to be partly cloudy to cloudy.
The Natuna and Anambas regions tend to experience more cloudy conditions. The highest air temperature in the Riau Islands region is forecast to reach 34 degrees Celsius in Natuna.
The minimal rainfall conditions also need to be a concern because a prolonged dry period can increase surface soil dryness and make vegetation more susceptible to burning.
However, BMKG did not say that Batam is completely free from the potential for rain. Localised rain can still form if atmospheric conditions support it, especially when there is an increase in humidity and convective cloud formation.
The public is urged to continue monitoring BMKG weather forecast information, particularly those who are active outdoors. Rapid weather changes still need to be anticipated, including the possibility of localised rain accompanied by strong winds.
For those active in coastal areas and the waters around Batam, wind conditions also need to be considered. BMKG forecasts that winds in Batam waters will blow from the southeast at speeds of around 7-11 knots, with maximum gusts reaching around 20 knots.
Wave heights in Batam waters remain in the low category, at around 0.7-0.9 metres. However, sea transport users are still advised to pay attention to weather developments before travelling.
With atmospheric conditions still relatively dry, rain in Batam is not expected to occur evenly. The public is also urged not to rely solely on sky conditions as an indicator, but to follow official weather forecast updates to find out about potential rain and changes in atmospheric conditions.
