Minibus overturns, 2 passengers die

JAKARTA (JP): Two minibus passengers were killed and three others seriously injured yesterday morning when a speeding and overloaded Metromini 92 -- plying the Grogol-Ciledug route -- overturned while making a turn on Jl. Meruya Ilir Raya, West Jakarta.

A preliminary police report attributed the accident, which took place at 6:15 a.m. when the street was still deserted, to the driver's failure to control the minibus.

"The final report on the accident is yet to be completed and submitted to us by the local police as some of the surviving victims are still undergoing medical treatment," city police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday afternoon.

The driver, Febrian, 26, has been questioned about the accident and arrested as it is believed he has no driver's license or registration papers for the vehicle, he said.

The two passengers who died were Nuralita Tifa Permaina, 29, and Adi Mulyono, 49. Both were West Jakarta residents.

"They died at the scene," Aritonang said. (cst)
