MIND ID Utilises AI to Detect Fatigue and Microsleep in Mining Operators
The Indonesian mining industry holding company, MIND ID, is utilising artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen occupational safety within mining environments. This includes detecting indications of fatigue and microsleep in operators.
This technology is part of MIND ID Group’s broader AI implementation aimed at improving safety, operational efficiency, and the reliability of the mining industry. AI is being applied across various stages of the mining value chain, from exploration and mining operations to mineral processing and energy management.
MIND ID Deputy President Director, Dany Amrul Ichdan, stated that the use of AI is directed towards enabling faster, more accurate, and data-driven decision-making. According to him, the technology holds value when it can provide a direct impact on the security and reliability of operations.
“The value of AI is not in the model itself. The value lies in safer decisions, more reliable assets, better resource discovery, and lower operational impacts,” said Dany during the Kadin Energy Insight Forum, as reported on Friday (11/9/2026).
Currently, the MIND ID Group is using an AI-enabled fatigue management system capable of providing early warnings for indications of fatigue and microsleep in operators. This system helps reduce the risk of workplace accidents while strengthening operational safety in the field.
The use of AI has also been expanded to the operational side through AI vision technology to monitor conveyor conditions and detect potential disruptions early. This technology can identify several issues, such as belt damage, unsuitable material sizes, and contamination that could potentially disrupt the production process.
MIND ID Group is also developing machine learning technology to optimise smelter operations, including the management of the FeNi Rotary Kiln. The application of this technology is aimed at increasing operational stability as well as the efficiency of the mineral processing process.
At PT Bukit Asam (PTBA), the integration of digital systems that connect operational data in real-time has helped improve work process efficiency and support the company’s operational productivity. AI is also being utilised in the exploration process through AI-enabled geologging to improve the quality of drilling data and accelerate rock core analysis.
MIND ID is further developing an energy and emissions intelligence system that connects asset reliability data, process efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions into a single integrated system. This system is expected to help the company increase energy efficiency while supporting sustainability targets.
Dany stated that the digital transformation undertaken by MIND ID is part of a paradigm shift in the national mining industry. The company’s future advantage will be determined not only by the size of mineral reserves but also by the ability to utilise data and technology to produce safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations.
“MIND ID is moving from resource advantage towards intelligence advantage. We want to ensure that the Indonesian mining industry enters a more advanced era by leveraging technological capabilities to create safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations,” he added.
The use of AI demonstrates that technology is being positioned as a vital component in managing MIND ID’s mining operations. Its implementation is directed not only towards increasing productivity but also towards strengthening occupational safety and ensuring the sustainability of operations.
