MIND ID Reclaims 8,000 ha of Ex-Mining Land and 37,700 ha of Watersheds
Holding Industri Pertambangan Indonesia MIND ID continues to strengthen environmental recovery efforts through the reclamation of 8,000 hectares of post-mining land and the rehabilitation of watersheds across various operational areas totalling 37,700 hectares. “Cumulatively up to 2025, the MIND ID Group has reclaimed more than 8,000 hectares of post-mining land and rehabilitated over 37,700 hectares of watersheds,” said MIND ID Division Head of Sustainability Binahidra Logiardi in Jakarta on Thursday. He stated that this achievement is part of the implementation of increasingly integrated sustainable mining practices, while also having a positive impact on improving biodiversity quality. According to him, the increasing global demand for strategic minerals must be balanced with better environmental management. Production increases must go hand in hand with the realisation of progressive and measurable environmental management programmes. This also serves as proof of the company’s commitment to regulators, investors, financial institutions, and the global market. “The realisation of reclamation and biodiversity protection is one of the main focuses in the implementation of the MIND ID Group’s Sustainability Pathway. Through this approach, each entity is encouraged to have an adequate biodiversity management protocol, especially in areas with high conservation value,” he said. He added that the impact of the programme is beginning to be seen in the improvement of biodiversity quality in several operational areas. PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, through its North Maluku Nickel Mining Business Unit, recorded an increase in the biodiversity index from 1.757 to 1.963. PT Freeport Indonesia has carried out mangrove conservation cumulatively covering more than 2,200 hectares. In contrast to the land reclamation programme, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium has focused on rehabilitating the Lake Toba water catchment area, which has reached more than 4,000 hectares as part of strengthening the region’s hydrological function. Furthermore, PT Timah Tbk recorded an increase in the biodiversity index from 2.88 in 2022 to 3.26 in 2025 through an integrated land and sea reclamation programme. In the nickel sector, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk realised post-mining land reclamation covering 156.67 hectares in the Sorowako Block and 1.42 hectares in the Indonesia Growth Project Morowali area throughout 2025. In addition, the company’s watershed rehabilitation has reached 17,877 hectares across various regions in Indonesia. He stressed that sustainability is no longer just part of the company’s operations, but has become a crucial factor in maintaining access to funding and markets. “The Sustainability Pathway is not merely a reporting tool, but an instrument to manage impact, mitigate risk, and create long-term value,” he said. Previously, Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat emphasised that economic development must go hand in hand with environmental conservation and biodiversity protection. This development is not only about islands and tourism, but also concerns shipping, maritime economic activities, and the fisheries sector. “However, what must always be remembered is that the development process must remain oriented towards environmental conservation and biodiversity protection,” he said.
