Indonesia’s mining industry holding company MIND ID is preparing national mineral supply chains to support the production of components for high-tech industries, including electric vehicles, energy infrastructure and aviation.

Speaking in a statement received in Denpasar, Bali, on Thursday, Danantara Indonesia Chief Technology Officer Sigit Puji Santosa said the government is targeting investment of US$20 billion to US$30 billion—around Rp361.4 trillion to Rp542.1 trillion—over the next three years for a number of priority industrial projects.

“Among these sectors, minerals, advanced materials and semiconductors are priorities for development because they have the potential to generate a major economic impact,” Sigit said.

He said the development of strategic industries could not rely solely on extracting and processing natural resources. Indonesia also needed to build technological capabilities that would enable domestic industries to produce components with greater complexity and higher economic value.

In this context, mastery of advanced materials is a link between Indonesia’s mineral wealth and the needs of modern manufacturing industries. Processing minerals into industrial materials also creates opportunities for technology partnerships, workforce skills development and greater domestic control over production processes.

Danantara Indonesia Chief Executive Officer Rosan Roeslani said Indonesia should use the investment achieved in downstream processing as a foundation for developing national technology and manufacturing capabilities.

Rosan said the transformation required collaboration with investment partners who would contribute not only capital, but also technological expertise and production capabilities.

“That means moving from merely processing resources to designing, making and refining the products of the future,” Rosan said.
