Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Mining Industry Holding, MIND ID, is expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across various stages of the mining value chain, including exploration, mining operations, mineral processing, and emission monitoring.

This transformation is part of an effort to strengthen the competitiveness of the national mineral industry amidst the need to increase the added value of natural resources and conduct increasingly efficient mining operations.

Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, MIND ID Deputy President Director Dany Amrul Ichdan stated that technological developments mean a mining company’s advantage can no longer rely solely on the volume of mineral resources managed.

The ability to interpret data and translate it into operational decisions is becoming a decisive factor for the productivity and reliability of the mining industry.

“The value of AI is not in the model itself. The value lies in safer decisions, more reliable assets, better resource discovery, and lower operational impacts,” said Dany.

According to him, the application of this technology is directed towards real-world issues in mining activities, including worker safety. The MIND ID Group has utilised AI-enabled fatigue management systems capable of providing early warnings when detecting indications of fatigue or microsleep in operators.

The use of AI also extends to production processes. AI vision technology is used to monitor conveyor conditions and identify potential disruptions early, such as belt damage, unsuitable material sizes, or contamination that could potentially hinder the production process.

In the mineral downstreaming process, machine learning technology is being developed to help optimise smelter operations, including the management of FeNi Rotary Kilns. The use of this operational data is intended to maintain process stability while increasing mineral processing efficiency.

Digital technology implementation is also underway at PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA). The integration of real-time operational data is being used to accelerate work process monitoring and support increased mining productivity.

AI technology is even being utilised from the resource searching stage through AI-enabled geologging. This technology helps accelerate rock core analysis and improves the quality of drilling data processing, ensuring that exploration and investment decisions are made based on stronger information.

At the same time, MIND ID is developing energy and emissions intelligence that integrates information regarding asset reliability, process efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions.

This system is designed to help companies identify energy efficiency opportunities while strengthening environmental impact management.

Dany assessed that these changes demonstrate the transformation of the national mining industry from a model primarily relying on resource advantages towards an industry that is increasingly based on technology, data, and knowledge.

“MIND ID is moving from resource advantage to intelligence advantage. We want to ensure that the Indonesian mining industry enters a more advanced era by leveraging technological capabilities to create safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations,” said Dany.
