Mincing words
At times The Jakarta Post intervenes deeply into the letters of the "Your Letters" column. This may give an entirely different meaning to the writer's idea. Sometimes I even find that whole sentences are changed or omitted.
A long time ago, I sent a letter to the Post on the subject of Subandrio, the first deputy prime minister in the final days of the Old Order government. I consider the last part of my letter very important. It ran somewhat like this: "... but in prison Subandrio has found something that is more valuable than anything else in the world and that is ALLAH. And with this he found peace." This part was entirely left out, which disappointed me considerably.
