Mimika Regent Reveals Reasons for Dozens of Civil Servants' Resignations from Office
Timika - The Regent of Mimika, Johannes Rettob, has stated that dozens of civil servants (ASN) in the Mimika District Government, Central Papua, have resigned from their positions because they cannot secure promotion within the established system.
“Approximately thirty civil servants have resigned from their positions as village heads and section chiefs. The reason they are stepping down is that they cannot gain promotion,” said Johannes Rettob in Timika on Sunday.
He explained that the resignations were undertaken consciously by the civil servants involved, as their current rank or grade did not qualify them to hold the positions they currently occupied.
“These civil servants are all governed by the system,” said Johannes Rettob.
He stressed that the career progression and rank of a civil servant are regulated within the civil service system, and when this is not followed correctly, it significantly affects a civil servant’s promotion and career prospects.
He provided an example: if a civil servant currently holds an echelon IV position, the minimum rank for that position is echelon III.b. However, if the official still holds echelon III.a rank, then they cannot be promoted.
“For a long time I have requested them to resign. When they cannot be promoted, only then do they submit their resignations. These are civil servants—they need their careers to advance. We must choose: do we want to be officials or do we want our careers to be healthy?” said Johannes Rettob.
He noted that in future, many officials within the Mimika District Government currently at echelon III level would be demoted to echelon IV level.
“Many officials already at echelon III will be demoted to echelon IV in the future, not as a disciplinary measure, but because their career progression was irregular. For example, some jumped directly from staff positions to echelon III, which is inappropriate and must follow proper procedures,” said Johannes Rettob.
