Mimika Military District Command Completes 10 Garuda Merah Putih Bridges
Timika (ANTARA) – The 1710/Mimika Military District Command (Kodim) has completed construction of 10 Garuda Merah Putih bridges across several areas of Mimika Regency, Central Papua. All of them are now being used by the local community.
Lieutenant Colonel Jozanda, commander of Kodim 1710/Mimika, said in Timika on Monday that construction of all the bridges was 100 per cent complete and formed part of efforts to improve connectivity for residents.
“Construction is 100 per cent complete. These 10 bridges have been built and are already being used by the community,” he said.
The bridges are located in SP 1 and SP 4 in Wania District, SP 3 in Kuala Kencana District, and Pasar Sentral Urban Village in Mimika Baru District.
Two of the 10 bridges are the largest and are located in Pasar Sentral Urban Village.
The Nangka Street bridge is 50 metres long and five metres wide, while the Pisang Bridge is 30 metres long and five metres wide.
“The others are eight, 10 and 12 metres long. They are all in Timika city and the outskirts of Mimika. The bridges were built for the benefit of the people, so the community can make use of the facilities,” he said.
Construction of the 10 Garuda Merah Putih bridges took around two months, following the launch of the bridge-building programme in Mimika in June 2026.
The programme was launched with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Nangka Street bridge in Pasar Sentral Urban Village, led by Major General TNI Febriel Buyung Sikumbang, commander of the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Regional Command.
Jozanda said the 50-metre bridge on Nangka Street took the longest to build because materials had to be brought in from outside Mimika.
“The one that took the longest was the 50-metre bridge on Nangka Street, in Pasar Sentral Urban Village. It took around two months or more because at the time we had to wait for materials from Surabaya, as they were not available in Timika,” he said.
He said Mimika Regency was expected to receive a further nine bridges for construction in the next phase.
According to preliminary information, the next phase is planned for November 2026, although Kodim 1710/Mimika is still awaiting confirmation from Indonesian Army Headquarters.
“The information is that it will be in November, but we do not yet know for certain whether Army Headquarters will make any changes. I will provide an update if there are,” he said.
Jozanda said he hoped the bridges would make it easier to travel between villages and urban communities, increase residents’ mobility, strengthen connectivity between villages and districts, and support local economic activity.
