Military Police Reveal Roles of Four Suspected TNI Members in Acid Attack on Andrie Yunus

Commander of the TNI Military Police Centre (Danpuspom TNI) Major General Yusri Nuryanto has revealed the roles of four suspected soldiers in the attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus.

The four TNI members with initials NDP, SL, BHW, and ES are suspected of involvement in the acid splashing incident against Andrie Yunus on 12 March.

In a press conference, Yusri explained that two soldiers are suspected of acting as executors. The other two are still under investigation.

“From the CCTV footage, there are two people who carried it out. As for the other two, where they were and what their roles were, we are still investigating,” said Yusri at TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/3).

Yusri stated that the four soldiers are from the Headquarters Detachment of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (Denma BAIS). They are from the Navy (AL) and Air Force (AU).

Their ranks are captain (NDP), first lieutenant (SL and BHW), and second sergeant (ES).

“NDP is a captain, then SL is a first lieutenant, BHW is a first lieutenant, and finally ES is a second sergeant,” said Yusri.

The four TNI members will be charged under Article 467 paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Criminal Code with a penalty of 4 to 7 years imprisonment.

Article 467 in the new Criminal Code regulates assault with prior planning. The full text of Article 467 paragraphs 1 and 2 of the new Criminal Code is as follows:

  1. Any person who commits an assault with prior planning shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 4 (four) years.

  2. If the act as referred to in paragraph (1) results in serious injury, the perpetrator shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 7 (seven) years.

Andrie Yunus became the victim of an acid splashing by unknown persons on Thursday (12/3) night.

The attack resulted in injuries to Andrie’s hands and feet as well as vision impairment. Medical examination results state that Andrie suffered 24 percent burns.

The four suspected perpetrators are currently detained by Puspom TNI. They are temporarily charged under Article 467 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code with a penalty of 4 to 7 years imprisonment.
