Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — A military helicopter reportedly crashed in Italy on Thursday local time after operating on a European Union (EU) peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Reuters reported on Friday (30 October 2026) that the helicopter plunged upside down, exploded and broke apart.

The incident occurred in the village of Gorice, in the Brčko District. Images published by local media showed the wreckage, with the helicopter completely crushed and unrecognisable.

There were 15 people on board at the time. Four people were reported dead and 11 others injured.

“Two of those killed were members of the Italian Army, while the other two were from the Italian Red Cross Military Volunteer Corps,” Italy’s Ministry of Defence said.

“The 11 injured are currently receiving treatment, and none is in a life-threatening condition,” the ministry added.

Italy’s Ministry of Defence said the cause of the crash was under investigation, and inquiries were under way to establish the sequence of events.

Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, expressed his profound condolences, particularly to the victims’ families.

“I offer my personal condolences, as well as those of the entire Ministry of Defence,” he said.

“There are no words that can ease such a profound loss,” he added.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed her condolences on social media.

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families and all those who—as part of a mission to advance peace and stability in the region—are now going through a period of great anxiety,” she said.

The aircraft had been deployed as part of Operation Althea, conducted by the European Union Force, which oversees implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
