Military Command Clarifies Viral Incident Involving Brigadier General at Jogja Marathon
A viral video captured a tense incident between the Commander of Korem 072/Pamungkas, Brigadier General Yuniar Dwi Hantono, and marshals at a marathon event held in the Prambanan Temple area, Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta. In the video, the tension arose after the general’s aide was disciplined by marshals for entering the track without wearing an official race bib (BIB). The event took place on Sunday (21/6).
The Korem 072/Pamungkas command has since spoken out. Head of Information for Korem 072/Pamungkas, Major Inf Suwito, stated that the incident was purely a misunderstanding. ‘The incident was a misunderstanding on the field between the track supervisor and the aide to the Commander of Korem 072/Pamungkas during the activity,’ Suwito said in a statement shared on Monday (22/6).
Suwito explained that initially, Brigadier General Yuniar, along with his wife, child, and aide, participated in the marathon as registered participants using four general admission tickets. According to the explanation received, the aide had been accompanying Yuniar throughout the event while wearing a participant number (BIB). ‘However, during the execution, it is suspected that the participant number came off while on the crowded track, causing a misunderstanding during the inspection by the official,’ he said.
Suwito added that the event organiser and Brigadier General Yuniar have since communicated directly and provided clarification. ‘All parties understand that the incident was purely a technical issue on the ground and it has been resolved amicably,’ he stated. Suwito emphasised that his party appreciates the professionalism of the committee and officials who carried out their duties according to procedure to maintain order. He also expressed appreciation for the organiser’s swift clarification, which prevented a prolonged misunderstanding in the public sphere. ‘In principle, the relationship between Korem 072/Pamungkas and the event organiser remains good. We hope the public can view this incident proportionally and not link it to other matters that are not in accordance with the facts,’ he said.
