Military and Police Secure Wamena-Kelila Road in Papua After Landslide
Jayapura (ANTARA) — Military and police personnel have been deployed to secure the road between Wamena in Jayawijaya Regency and Kelila in Central Mamberamo Regency, Papua, which has been severed by landslides.
Central Mamberamo Police Chief Senior Commissioner Mukabsi said in Jayapura on Tuesday that the Kelila-Wamena road access was cut off following landslides triggered by heavy rainfall that struck the area on Sunday evening (15 February).
The landslides occurred in Onggobalo Village, he said, causing damage to several road sections leading to districts in Central Mamberamo Regency, including Eragayam and Bokondini.
A security operation led by Kelila Sector Police Deputy Chief First Inspector Ridwan Kharie identified at least five landslide points that have rendered the road impassable to vehicles.
"We have carried out identification of the affected points and coordinated with the regional government, and we hope this can be addressed promptly so that it does not impact the community," said Senior Commissioner Mukabsi.
He warned that if the damage to the road sections is not dealt with swiftly, it could lead to rising prices for basic necessities due to disrupted distribution caused by transportation obstacles.
A joint military-police team stands ready to assist in the evacuation of landslide debris and the opening of emergency road access to accelerate the restoration of mobility for residents.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant, given that rainfall intensity remains high and there is potential for further landslides.
"We hope that infrastructure recovery measures will be taken immediately, ensuring that logistical distribution to the community continues to run smoothly," said Central Mamberamo Police Chief Senior Commissioner Mukabsi.
