Military Analyst: Iran Holds Cards That Could Surprise Trump

Iraqi political analyst Atheer al-Shar’a believes Iran currently holds winning cards against the US in war and that Tehran could deliver a surprise to Washington. Al-Shar’a stated that US President Donald Trump recently attacked Iran to implement a project that Barack Obama had rejected during his presidency. “Donald Trump is executing a Zionist scheme that former president Obama refused to implement,” al-Shar’a added. According to al-Shar’a, Trump is trying to realise Zionist demands often referred to as the “New Middle East” project. By attacking Iran and targeting its territory, Trump is attempting to create chaos in the region. “However, Tehran holds many cards to play and could surprise Washington and the US administration,” al-Shar’a said. Meanwhile, BBC expert Jeremy Bowen assessed that Donald Trump is currently faced with a series of bad options as the US president tries to find a way out to end the conflict with Iran. In an interview with Radio 4, Bowen said there is currently no good outcome for Trump, even though he has repeatedly claimed that the US has won the war. “He could escalate, which will not lead to victory and could lead to a lot of disruption and trouble. If there is a way back to a negotiation process, which you could say is the only possible way, it requires concessions to Iran that would result in a strategic defeat for the US, caused by his recklessness in deciding to start the war,” Bowen said. “All military experts will say, the only way to truly secure and open the Strait of Hormuz is to force a major ground operation which would be very risky, because it would require hundreds of thousands of troops, and that is not going to happen.”
