Military Academy Governor: Plataran Battle Forms Foundation for Professionalism
Magelang (ANTARA) - The Governor of the Military Academy, Major General Rano Tilaar, stated that the values of the Plataran Battle should serve as the foundation for building the professionalism, loyalty, and integrity of soldiers, based on the Saptamarga, the Soldier’s Oath, and the Eight Duties of the TNI, for the glory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Major General Rano Tilaar, in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, reminded the cadets, who are future leaders of the Indonesian Army, to not only excel physically and tactically, but also to be intellectually mature and morally strong. He made these remarks while leading the 77th Commemoration Ceremony of the Plataran Battle, held at the Plataran Monument in Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the Yogyakarta Military Academy Family Association, officials from the TNI and Polri, local government, cadets from the Military Academy, and local residents, as a form of respect for the services of the heroes. The Governor of the Military Academy emphasised that the commemoration of the Plataran Battle is not just about remembering a historical event, but also about reaffirming the values of struggle, sacrifice, and patriotism. He explained that the study of history at the Military Academy is not only theoretical, but is also internalised through character-building training, so that the cadets can understand the meaning and values behind every heroic event in the nation’s history. The Plataran Battle was part of the series of struggles following the Second Dutch Military Aggression on 19 December 1948. On 24 February 1949, a fierce battle took place in the Plataran area, resulting in the deaths of two junior officers, five cadets, one member of the Student Army, and a number of civilians. The names of the fallen cadets are now commemorated by naming buildings and facilities at the Military Academy, as a form of respect and a reminder of the spirit of struggle for future generations.
