Alexander Mogilny scored a pair of goals, including the 400th
of his career, as the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Anaheim
Mighty Ducks 6-1 on Monday.
Mogilny, who was sixth in the NHL with 43 goals last season
for New Jersey, already has four in three games for his new team,
tying him for the league lead.
The Russian winger opened the scoring 53 seconds into the game
and made it 4-0 74 seconds into the second period. It was the
400th goal in 783 games for Mogilny.
Toronto's revamped offense includes newcomer Robert Reichel
and Gary Roberts, who teamed with Mogilny to dominate the game.
The line combined for three goals and five assists.
Newcomer Mikael Renberg added a goal and an assist for the
Maple Leafs, who are 1-1-1 this season. They have a league-high
12 goals after ranking 14th last season with 232.
Curtis Joseph made 21 saves en route to his 105th victory with
the Leafs -- good for fifth in franchise history.
Mike Leclerc snapped Joseph's shutout 4:51 into the third
period, but the Ducks dropped to 1-1-1 on a season-opening four-
game road trip.
In Boston, Byron Dafoe recorded 22 saves for his 23rd career
shutout as the Bruins blanked the Washington Capitals 4-0 to open
a season with three straight wins for the first time since 1994.
Dafoe, with a strong defense in front of him, registered his
100th victory in a Boston uniform. The Bruins kept the shutout
intact by killing a 48-second 5-on-3 penalty midway through the
third period.
Boston, without suspended right wing Bill Guerin, got goals
from four different players, including power-play tallies in the
second period by Sergei Samsonov and Joe Thornton, who also
recorded a pair of assists.
In Calgary, Shane Doan scored a power-play goal 28 seconds
into overtime to lift the Phoenix Coyotes to their first win of
the season, 2-1 over a Flames team seeking their best start in
eight years.
Phoenix got its sixth power play of the game after center Rob
Niedermayer was penalized on a questionable tripping call with 73
seconds remaining in regulation.
Teppo Numminen was stationed at the left point and, after
taking a pass from Danny Markov, fired a slap shot that deflected
off Doan past Roman Turek.
