Migration Crisis: Spain Closes Border with Morocco near Melilla

The Spanish government has closed the Beni Ansar border post, the only border access between Spain and Morocco in Melilla, after migrants attempted to break through barricades to force their way into Spanish territory. As reported by the Spanish international news agency, EFE, on Thursday (30/7), security forces successfully thwarted these attempts at illegal entry into Spanish territory. The report also revealed that police patrols have been deployed to the border post and several other points along the frontier. The closure of the border post in Melilla comes amidst an escalating migration crisis affecting Spain’s two autonomous cities in North Africa that border Morocco. Previously, thousands of young Moroccans gathered at the border between Morocco and Ceuta, prompting Spanish authorities to deploy additional forces to the city, including national police, military personnel, and civil guards.
