Midwives wait for pay checks

PURBALINGGA, Central Java: Ninety-two midwives working in
several villages in Purbalingga regency say they have not
received their monthly pay checks since January.

The midwives, who have been working in the region for the last
six months, visited the Purbalingga branch of Bank Rakyat
Indonesia recently to inquire about their salaries. They were
told that the bank had not received the money from the Central
Java Health Office.

This is not the first time that their pay checks have arrived
late.

"This is not our responsibility," Purbalingga Regent Soelarno
said, commenting on the midwives' misfortune. "I feel sorry for
