Middle East Tensions Escalate: US Urges Citizens to Leave Iran Immediately

The US Virtual Embassy in Iran has issued a security warning urging its citizens to leave the country. This security alert follows the escalating tensions in the Middle East following attacks by Houthi rebels against Saudi Arabia.

“The US Virtual Embassy in Iran has issued a security warning advising all citizens not to travel to Iran ‘for any reason’ and to leave the country immediately,” stated the US Virtual Embassy, as reported by Al Jazeera on Monday (2026/9/21).

Meanwhile, in a statement published on its website, the US Virtual Embassy stated that American citizens currently in the Middle East should increase vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. The advisory also includes an order not to travel to Iran and an instruction to leave Iran immediately.

On its website, the US assessed that the escalation of conflict in the Middle East has the potential to intensify rapidly following the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

“The Iran-backed Houthi group has carried out hostile acts against Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting civilian airports. This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly,” the embassy stated.

American citizens travelling to or from the region are advised to monitor information regarding airport and airline operations.

It is noted that US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have become targets. The US Virtual Embassy stated that Iran and Iran-backed groups could target other US interests abroad or at locations associated with the United States and American citizens worldwide, including US businesses and other institutions.
