Microsoft Suddenly Creates New Company, Deploys 6,000 Employees

Microsoft has created a new company named Microsoft Frontier Co., preparing 6,000 employees for the new artificial intelligence venture. The staff will work on a practice known as forward deployed engineering (FDE). The unit will comprise Microsoft employees, technical consultants, support staff, and sales personnel. Microsoft reportedly spent US$2.5 billion (Rp 44.8 trillion) on the new company. The venture is being led by Rodrigo Kede Lima, who previously served as Microsoft’s business leader in Asia. The company represents Microsoft’s latest effort to focus on AI. Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business, explained that FDE, or Full Design Environment, emerged because customers are at different stages of trying to understand AI. ‘Are they going straight to one model from OpenAI or from Anthropic or a collection of models? Are they applying a technology-first mindset? How do they look at existing business processes and operations?’ he said. Althoff noted that the FDE role became popular thanks to Palantir, whose software is used by US frontline troops when deployed overseas and sent to bases in Afghanistan. He added that Microsoft will support more models, including more connectors to data and integration with open recording systems. Several companies have previously developed similar initiatives, with Amazon launching an FDE initiative backed by a US$1 billion investment. Anthropic and OpenAI have also formed FDE groups, working with private equity firms, banks, and consulting companies on the new venture.
