Microsoft Suddenly Creates New Company, Deploys 6,000 Employees

Microsoft has recently established a new company named Microsoft Frontier Co. Approximately 6,000 employees are being prepared for this new venture within the field of AI.

These employees will engage in practices known as forward deployed engineering (FDE). The unit will consist of Microsoft employees, technical consultants, support staff, and sales personnel.

Microsoft is reported to have allocated US$2.5 billion (approximately Rp 44.8 trillion) for this new company. The leader of this new venture is Rodrigo Kede Lima, who previously served as the head of Microsoft’s business in Asia.

The company represents Microsoft’s latest effort to focus on AI. Microsoft’s Chief Commercial Officer, Judson Althoff, explained that FDE emerged because customers are in different positions and are striving to understand AI.

“Are they directly using a single model from OpenAI or from Anthropic, or a collection of models? Are they adopting a technology-first mindset? How do they view existing business processes and operations?” he explained, as quoted from CNBC International.

Althoff noted that the FDE role has gained popularity thanks to Palantir. Palantir’s software is known to be used by United States (US) frontline troops when deployed abroad and sent to bases in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Microsoft explained that it will support more models, including more connectors to data and integration with open recording systems.

Several companies have already developed similar initiatives prior to Microsoft. For instance, Amazon has introduced an FDE initiative with an investment of US$1 billion (Rp 17.9 trillion).

Additionally, Anthropic and OpenAI have also formed FDE groups. Both are working alongside private equity firms, banks, and consulting firms for these new ventures.
