Microsoft Announces Project Solara for Mobile AI Devices

Microsoft is envisioning a new type of hardware that prioritises artificial intelligence (AI) agents in its design and operation by leveraging Android through Project Solara. Project Solara represents Microsoft’s vision for this new platform; rather than running on any Windows operating system, the platform is built upon the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform, which is itself based on Android. At present, Microsoft does not plan to sell Project Sollar hardware directly, but the company has designed several reference designs intended to inspire other manufacturers, including a desktop-style screen similar to the Nest Hub and wearable smart identity badges.

Microsoft’s concept involves running a series of applications or devices tied to a single multipurpose AI. Project Solara will introduce users to various specialised agents, each designed for specific skills, similar to Gemini Gems. Furthermore, the user interface does not need to be rigid, thanks to a ‘UI just-in-time’ feature that allows the AI to select the most effective way to display results.

Microsoft emphasised that this platform establishes the hardware and software requirements necessary to meet corporate needs for management, security, and privacy, while ensuring that critical user experiences are delivered. “Project Solara is specifically designed for a new era of agent-centric devices,” Microsoft stated in a release on Wednesday.

With this move, Microsoft is officially entering the increasingly crowded competition for AI agent platforms. Unlike the approach of other companies that may integrate AI agents into existing operating systems, Microsoft has chosen to build a dedicated platform.
