Mexico City (ANTARA) – The Mexican government has deployed special liaison and coordination teams to several Pacific coastal states in preparation for Hurricane Vance’s movement towards the region.

Mexico’s National Civil Protection Coordination said on Sunday (25 October) that the Category 1 storm on the Saffir–Simpson wind scale was expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and high waves to the western states of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.

“Residents living or travelling near riverbanks, streams or waterways should keep a close eye on their surroundings and move immediately to higher ground at the first sign of rising water levels,” the agency warned in a statement.

At 9am local time (10pm WIB), Hurricane Vance was about 440 kilometres south-west of the port of Lázaro Cárdenas in Michoacán and 510 kilometres south-west of the resort city of Acapulco in Guerrero, according to the latest report from Mexican authorities.

The hurricane was moving north-west at 7 kilometres per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching 150 kilometres per hour. It was expected to bring rainfall of 50 to 75 millimetres to the four affected states, the report said.

The rainfall could also trigger landslides, raise river and stream levels, cause waterways to overflow and lead to flooding in low-lying areas, the report added.
