Mexican President Urges US Politicians to Stop Using Mexico as Campaign Issue

Mexico City (ANTARA) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday (30/7) called on United States politicians to stop making Mexico a campaign issue ahead of the midterm elections this November. “Mexico should not be a campaign issue, as they have their own problems in the US. Mexico is not a pinata for anyone,” the President stated during her daily press conference. These remarks follow accusations from Republican Congressman Carlos Gimenez, who alleged that the Sheinbaum administration is undermining the US government’s “maximum pressure” policy towards Cuba, following the announcement of new humanitarian aid being sent to the Caribbean island. “Although Mexico and the US maintain cooperation based on the principle of collaboration without subordination, Mexico remains committed to its long-term policy towards Cuba,” Sheinbaum said. She added that humanitarian aid to the island would continue as a matter of sovereignty and humanity.
