Mexican President criticises US tariff policy

Mexico City (ANTARA) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday (4/8) reiterated her rejection of United States (US) tariff policies. Sheinbaum argued that there are more effective ways to strengthen the regional economy and resolve trade disputes between nations. “We have not agreed with the tariffs … as have almost all other countries, because we believe there are other mechanisms … to strengthen one economic region over another,” Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference at the National Palace. The statement was made amid a growing debate in the US over President Donald Trump’s trade policies, after a coalition of 25 US states filed a lawsuit challenging the new blanket tariffs imposed on imports from most US trading partners. The lawsuit, filed in the US Court of International Trade, seeks to strike down the 10 percent or 12.5 percent tariffs on the grounds that they exceed the legal authority of the US executive branch. According to Sheinbaum, while trade policy is a decision for the US government, there are better ways to spur regional economic development.
