Meutya Hafid Conducts Surprise Visit to Meta Office, Raises Disinformation Content Concerns

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.COM - Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid conducted a surprise inspection at Meta’s office in Sequis Tower Building, Senayan, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. The visit was to follow up on disinformation issues that the government has long complained about. She was not alone; Meutya was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Communications and Digital, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polkam), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), the Internal Security and Information Security (Baintelkam) unit of the Police, and the Cyber and Securty Command (Satsiber TNI). They entered Meta’s office at about 15:20 WIB and left at 16:33 WIB. ‘This afternoon we are carrying out a surprise inspection at Meta’s office,’ Meutya said after the inspection. The action followed repeated communications with Meta, both formal and persuasive. However, because many obligations had not yet been fulfilled, the government ultimately proceeded with the surprise inspection. She stressed that disinformation is not solely an Indonesian issue but a global problem. The United Nations and the World Economic Forum (WEF) have called disinformation one of the world’s greatest threats today. ‘And Indonesia, the government will not stay silent,’ she said. Meutya Hafid noted that they had met with Meta to convey a number of requests. ‘First, openness of algorithms, (and) openness of content moderation. Then for Meta to report matters that are indeed its obligations to report. Including questions that could not be answered, we asked for heightened monitoring,’ she explained. She emphasised that Indonesia is a very large digital market with around 230 million internet users.
