Meunasah in Aceh Besar Provides 200 Packets of Traditional Acehnese Porridge Daily During Ramadan
Banda Aceh (ANTARA) — The meunasah of Gampong Beung Bakjok in Kuta Baro district, Aceh Besar regency, is providing around 200 packets of iftar food daily throughout Ramadan 1447 Hijriah/2026, in the form of a traditional Acehnese porridge known as ie bu peudah.
“This meunasah prepares around 200 packets of ie bu peudah distributed as iftar food to the community every day during Ramadan,” said Faisal, coordinator of the iftar provision team for Gampong Beung Bakjok, in Aceh Besar on Sunday.
Ie bu peudah is a distinctive Acehnese culinary dish resembling a spicy porridge, made from rice cooked with dozens of varieties of leaves mixed with spices and coconut.
In addition to local residents, Faisal said, the traditional porridge is also distributed to travellers who stop to break their fast at the village meunasah.
“Ie bu peudah is only cooked during the fasting month. The men do the cooking, whilst the women prepare the spice mixtures. The cooking duties rotate daily, so the flavour naturally differs from one day to the next,” Faisal said.
According to Faisal, the tradition of cooking ie bu peudah has been passed down through generations. Since his own childhood some 40 years ago, the practice of preparing the porridge during Ramadan was already well established.
“The tradition of cooking ie bu peudah during the fasting month exists only in villages within Kuta Baro district. The cooking ingredients are all donated by residents,” he said.
The cooking process takes between two and three hours each day. Once the food is ready, residents come to collect it bringing their own containers, typically after the Asr prayer.
“The ie bu peudah is always fully distributed every day. For those who do not bring a container, we provide plastic bags so the traditional Acehnese porridge can be taken home,” Faisal said.
