Meugang tradition marks start of Holy Ramadan in Meulaboh
The Acehnese community in Meulaboh, the capital of West Aceh regency, observed the Meugang tradition to mark the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
Meugang is a centuries-old Acehnese tradition celebrated three times a year: ahead of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. The tradition centres on the communal preparation and consumption of meat dishes, particularly beef, bringing families and communities together.
The tradition holds deep cultural significance in Aceh, where markets bustle with activity as residents purchase beef and other ingredients to prepare special Meugang meals. The celebration reflects the integration of Islamic observance with Acehnese cultural identity.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs declared 19 February 2026 as the first day of Ramadan 1447 Hijri, following an Isbat confirmation meeting in Jakarta.
