Metro Jaya Police Strengthen Surveillance at Various Points to Prevent Wrong-Way Driving
The Metro Jaya Regional Police Traffic Directorate has strengthened efforts to prevent traffic violations, specifically focusing on wrong-way driving and the use of obscured licence plates. These measures are being implemented simultaneously at several locations with high violation rates within the Metro Jaya Police jurisdiction.
This action follows directives from the Metro Jaya Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, who instructed the Traffic Directorate to increase field presence and supervision to prevent violations and ensure public safety. Following these instructions, the Traffic Directorate’s Law Enforcement Sub-unit has implemented preventative and supervisory measures at several key locations.
According to reports received on Tuesday (29/09/2026), surveillance and prevention efforts are being conducted across South, Central, East, West, and North Jakarta, as well as South Tangerang and the Soekarno-Hatta Airport area. Officers have been deployed to various sites to remind, educate, and ensure that road users adhere to the prevailing traffic rules and directions.
These efforts are a response to numerous public complaints regarding the prevalence of motorists driving against the flow of traffic. Such behaviour not only disrupts traffic flow but also increases the risk of vehicle conflicts, as oncoming traffic faces drivers moving in the wrong direction.
This risk is reflected in traffic accident data related to wrong-way driving over the last five years. Between 2022 and 2026, a total of 341 victims of wrong-way driving accidents were recorded. Of this number, 24 people died, 34 sustained serious injuries, and 283 sustained minor injuries.
In 2022, 78 victims were recorded, including 9 deaths, 8 serious injuries, and 61 minor injuries. In 2023, there were 84 victims, comprising 6 deaths, 15 serious injuries, and 63 minor injuries. In 2024, 68 victims were recorded, including 7 deaths, 3 serious injuries, and 58 minor injuries. Meanwhile, in 2025, 83 victims were recorded, including 2 deaths, 5 serious injuries, and 76 minor injuries. For the ongoing period in 2026, 28 victims have been recorded, consisting of 3 serious injuries and 25 minor injuries.
This data demonstrates that wrong-way driving is not merely a matter of violating traffic rules and directions. Over approximately five years, accidents related to driving against the flow have resulted in hundreds of victims, including dozens of fatalities.
This situation is a serious concern because the risks of wrong-way driving threaten not only the violators themselves but also all other road users. Therefore, the surveillance by the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate is not solely focused on enforcement. The presence of officers at high-risk points is also directed towards preventing accidents and reducing the risk of casualties through education, advisories, regulation, and direct supervision.
In addition to anticipating wrong-way driving, officers are also paying attention to vehicles with obscured or unreadable licence plates. Surveillance is conducted using various methods, including handheld ETLE (Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement) devices, alongside other police measures as required by field conditions.
This activity is part of the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate’s efforts to build public awareness through officer presence, education, and direct supervision. Every violation identified serves as material for evaluation to determine appropriate preventative measures based on the specific characteristics and conditions of each location.
The Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate hopes that the public will increasingly understand that using roads according to the correct direction and applicable rules is a vital part of collective safety. Driving against the flow is not a shortcut worth the risk.
The Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate stated that these prevention efforts will continue sustainably, prioritising an educational and humanistic approach to foster a more orderly, safe, and respectful driving culture on the roads.
