Metro Jaya Police Repatriate Three Indonesian Women Trafficked to Libya, One Suffers Lung Disease After Alleged Exploitation

Jakarta – The Metro Jaya Regional Police have repatriated three Indonesian citizens who were victims of human trafficking from Libya. All three victims are women and are alleged to have suffered exploitation while working in the country, with one repatriated whilst suffering from a lung disorder. The repatriation was carried out by a team from the General Criminal Investigation Directorate together with the Directorate for the Protection of Women and Children and Combating Human Trafficking of the Metro Jaya Police, with support from the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the West Java BP3MI. The Director of PPA-PPO at Metro Jaya Police, Senior Commissioner Rita Wulandari Wibowo, stated that the three victims successfully repatriated have the initials NAR, SS, and NKR. ‘There are three victims, with the initials NAR, SS, and NKR. They are all adults, all women. They experienced economic exploitation because they were placed in a country that is not a placement country for Indonesian Migrant Workers, as there is a Manpower Ministerial Decree regarding the moratorium in Libya,’ Rita said during a press conference at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Tuesday. Upon arrival in Indonesia, the three victims immediately underwent health checks and psychological assessments to ascertain their physical and mental condition after repatriation. According to Rita, the results showed the victims suffered from various health problems allegedly triggered by inhumane working conditions in Libya. They were known to have irregular working hours, a lack of rest, and minimal food intake, which impacted their physical condition. ‘Regarding the victims’ general condition, one was repatriated in a state of lung sickness, suffering from respiratory illness. The others are in a healthy condition,’ she said. In addition to lung disorders, the victim also complained of stomach problems and pain in the solar plexus. All medical treatment is now being handled by the Medical and Health Division team of the Metro Jaya Police. As part of the recovery process, the Metro Jaya Police have also placed the victims in a safe house to guarantee their security while the legal process is ongoing.
