Metro Jaya Police Begal-Hunting Team Arrests 173 Street-Crime Suspects Across May 2026

JAKARTA — The Metro Jaya Regional Police’s Begal Hunter Team has arrested 173 street-crime suspects in the last three weeks, dating from 1 May 2026. The suspects are linked to 127 police reports within the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police. The cases include robberies with violence (curas), theft with aggravating circumstances (curat), and motor vehicle theft (curanmor). A total of 38 suspects were remanded to the Metro Jaya Police detention centre, while 139 others were held in detention at the district police stations (polres) across the jurisdiction. During the arrests, officers were forced to use decisive and measured force against some suspects by shooting at their legs, as the suspects resisted officers and attempted to flee. In the same period, the Begal Hunter Team conducted 14,822 patrols. By contrast, in the previous month patrols totalled 27,915. Besides handling 127 reports, the Metro Jaya Police, together with the district police, are still pursuing suspects from a total of 1,156 reports received since 1 May 2026. Director of General Crime Investigation (Reserse Kriminal Umum) of the Metro Jaya Police, Police Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, explained that in the last three weeks the police received 651 reports of curat, 396 reports of ordinary theft, 209 reports of curanmor, and 27 reports of curas. “Sampai dengan hari ini, tim Pemburu Begal kami masih terus bekerja melakukan pengungkapan terhadap kasus-kasus yang masih belum terungkap. Masih ada 413 perkara yang sedang kami selesaikan,” said Iman. In uncovering the 127 cases, police seized 466 items of evidence, including 84 mobile phones, 69 motorcycles, 45 blades, and 8 firearms. Additionally, police seized several four-wheeled vehicles, ‘T’ keys used to steal vehicles, and other evidence such as clothing, CCTV footage, and stolen goods. Iman said many cases began with posts of incidents on social media, noting that the documentation circulating on social media greatly assists investigations and suspect identification. “With the viral nature of these posts, we can also quickly obtain information from witnesses, whether they know the identities of the suspects or witnessed the crime,” he added.
